Aerospace industry in Belgium
Belgium has always held a central and strategic position in Europe: not only because of its geographical proximity to the economic heart of the continent (France, Germany, United Kingdom, the Netherlands…) or but also because of its presence of various institutions of the European Union on its land (European parliament, European Commission, Council of the EU…).
There are three aerospace clusters on the territory: SKYWIN for the Walloon region, FLAG for Flemish region and BAG for Brussels. Together, they gather over 220 businesses working daily in the aerospace industry and they have developed a single sector with a 2.8 billion euros turnover, massively linked to exportation.
Among the companies established in Belgium, we can find: SABCA, Thales Group, Altran, Siemens, Safran Aero Boosters, ASCO, Esterline, Sonaca, Spacebel, AKKA Technologies... as well as numerous SMEs, research centers and institutions.
Through key areas such as composites materials and processes, 3D printing, metal alloys, embedded systems or space and drones applications and systems, the Belgian aerospace industry owns a unique know-how that is required to stay competitive and attractive towards a constantly changing global market. This expertise is one of the main reasons why Belgian companies are involved in major aerospace projects initiated by Airbus, Boeing, Dassault and Ariane rockets.
